Crown and Bridge

A crown is a type of dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant. Crown can be used to cover and protect back and front teeth. Crowns are often needed to:

  • Protect a weakened/brittle tooth from fracturing (avoids risk of losing teeth)
  • Cover a tooth that is heavily filled. It is fairly common for heavily filled teeth to have cracks. The cracks will get larger painlessly and eventually the tooth will shatter. Cracks on the teeth are like cracks on the windscreen, if not treated, they will progress and finally the windscreen will shatter.
  • Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
  • Restore a fractured tooth
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth
  • Protect a tooth that has had root canal treatment
  • Correct misaligned teeth to make them straight

A crown is like a helmet that protects one’s head in all directions. Crowns can be constructed by our dental technician (requiring two appointments) or using our single visit 3D CEREC technology. There are three common types of crowns: porcelain, porcelain fused to metal or metal crown. Our dentist can advise which type is the best for specific teeth and conditions.

Step by step for crown appointment

First Appointment

1. The tooth will be prepared to make room for the crown to sit on the top of the tooth.

2. Impressions will be taken and sent to our dental technicians to make the crown.

3. A temporary crown will be cemented on the prepared tooth, to protect the tooth in the interim until the crown is ready.

Second Appointment

1. The temporary crown will be taken off.

2. The crown is then positioned and fastened with a permanent cement.

What is a Bridge?

Bridges are common solutions for a person that is missing one or more teeth in row. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease, which most likely will lead to jaw bone disease (periodontitis), which is the main cause of tooth loss for adjacent teeth.

Bridges are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are an alternative treatment option to a dental implant for a missing tooth. Bridges span the space where the teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth adjacent to the empty space. Porcelain or ceramic bridges can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth.
