Veneers in Adelaide

You’ve seen them before - a set of perfectly aligned and white teeth. And the first question that pops in your head would be, are they natural? If not, then what are they? And how do you get them?

There are many different ways to improve the appearance of your natural teeth, from whitening procedures to treating damaged teeth. But if you want a quick and simple way to drastically change the look of your smile, veneers might be the way to go.

Veneers are thin, porcelain shells that are applied to the front surfaces of teeth in combination with bonding adhesives. They have been used since 1928 as a way of replacing damaged tooth structures, and today, it is one of the most popular cosmetic dental services availed by people.

You may opt for dental veneers if you suffer from the following:

Chipped or broken teeth

Discoloured or stained teeth

Large gaps in between teeth

Severely fractured teeth

Worn-out old veneers

Getting Porcelain Veneers

Before the procedure

While dental veneers seem really low maintenance and easy to apply, there’s a lot of planning to do before seeing your new set of teeth. You may need to visit our Adelaide dentist a few times for the consultation and the mock-up.

The first consultation is the initial visit with our dentist. At this point, our cosmetic dentist will discuss how dental veneers work, what their advantages are, and whether they’re a good choice for you. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask questions about the procedure and what to expect from it.

Next is the mock-up. The mock-up is a demonstration of how your new veneers will look before they’re applied to your teeth. This way, you can decide whether they’ll suit you. The mock-up includes the positioning of your new veneers on your teeth so that we know exactly how the outcome will look. This can show you how they’ll change the appearance of your smile and help you decide if that’s what you want.

During the procedure

Veneer During

Once you give it a go, we now proceed to the process of getting your teeth and your veneers from Royal Park Dental ready.

Prepping your teeth

You might expect to have your teeth heavily trimmed during this process as it’s what you’ve heard from other people who got veneers or it’s what you’ve read on the internet. However, our dentists at Royal Park Dental know how important tooth enamel is, so we do minimal to no trimming of teeth. This is to ensure we still have a strong foundation for your teeth to accommodate the veneers.

Creating teeth impression

The next step is for the dentist to take a series of impressions of your teeth. This involves applying a material to your teeth (usually putty or plaster) to create a mould. In some cases, our dentists also require x-rays to complement the impression in making sure the veneers are a fit.

The impressions are sent to our lab where we make use of computer technology to create custom-made veneers from high-quality porcelain. This may take a few weeks as our laboratory technicians make sure every veneer unit is polished to perfection. Once delivered to our dental clinic, we will then schedule the fitting of your veneers.

Veneer fitting and cementing

The final step is fitting your veneers onto your teeth. Our Adelaide dentist will assess if each unit is a fit when it comes to the shape and shade. In some cases, different shades of bonding glue are used to match the colour of the old teeth to make them look as natural as possible.

Once the fitting is done, it’s time to prepare the teeth for cementing the veneers. First, your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned to remove all contaminants that may prevent the veneers from bonding properly. Then, each unit is cemented carefully to each tooth. The cementing process involves using special adhesives to bond the veneer onto your teeth where applicable. After which, our dentist will make final adjustments and polishing so that the procedure is finished with having your porcelain veneers from Royal Park Dental!

After the procedure

Porcelain veneers are one of the most low-maintenance dental treatments available. They’re permanently bonded and stain-resistant, meaning you never have to worry about them falling off or becoming discoloured. However, there are a few things you’ll need to take care of to make sure they stay in perfect condition for years. They may last for more than 10 years with proper care and maintenance.

1. Regular brushing and flossing are encouraged just like you would normally take care of your natural teeth. Use toothpaste with fluoride and gargle with a gentle mouthwash before bedtime.

2. Just like your natural teeth, veneers may become chipped or cracked when used to bite on hard food or objects. Avoid using your teeth to open bottles, crack ice, or chew hard candy and fruits.

3. Teeth clenching and grinding are inevitable at night, so we recommend using night guards. Night guards are a great way to protect your veneers if you do wear them at night. Using one is a great way to lessen the chances of damage and wear in general, so get them as soon as you have your veneers.

4. Visit our dental clinic at least twice a year for check-ups, cleaning, and maintenance of your veneers. Plaque may build up or your gums may recede over time, exposing your natural teeth. Just let us know and we’ll do a repair or replacement of your veneers whenever needed.
